You should never judge a book by its cover, but when it comes to video games, it’s so easy to do. The slew of RPGs releasing every month with a new set of characters beautifully displayed on the box with gorgeous anime art is enough to create a sense of fatigue even in those like me who rarely play the games. I have to say, though, every time I play one of these games with artwork on their covers that goes harder than it has any right to, they outshine every expectation I had for them and provide me with a memorable experience I take with me and tell my friends about. Granblue Fantasy: Relink more than fits this bill, it transcends what an action RPG should be and offers players reason after reason to spend one hundred hours with it and then some.

A Grand Start and a Globe-Spanning Adventure

The introduction to Granblue Fantasy: Relink sets the bar for epic tutorials that throw players into the heart of the action. Not 30 seconds in are players already holding their own against continent-sized dragons while floating on a ship that’s transporting them precariously through the sky and dodging bright beams of energy from the aforementioned flying lizard.

Following that epic beginning, I could not put this game down. The controls are simple to learn and take very little time to master. That’s not what most players will care about right away, though, because the story keeps the intrigue going for every hour it can.

After falling from the skyfaring ship in the introduction, players make their way to a town and embark on a fantastic adventure in every sense of the word. The world of Granblue is made up of floating islands where various factions and societies have carved out an existence. It’s a wonderful concept and one that I immediately found myself lost in.

Of course, a world is nothing if it’s empty, but the game pours on flavoring in the form of fleshed-out characters and sandbox locations that are fully realized. Even the main hubs, major locations within the world, are packed with citizens going about their business chatting about other locals, having a coffee, or staring off into the distance at an impossible castle that’s somehow held up against the strong winds each sky island must be battered by.

As the story progresses, players will explore every corner of the world and encounter many of its inhabitants, all of whom vary wildly depending on their loyalties and origins. Considering this is the first major action RPG in the series, with the previous games having been a premium mobile RPG with gacha mechanics and a fighter title, Granblue Fantasy: Relink shows an unprecedented level of polish, world-building, and immersion that the likes of Final Fantasy XVI or Elden Ring can only compete with.

Growing From its Roots

As I’ve mentioned, the Granblue series began with a gacha title similar to Genshin Impact. The initial draw of the massive world filled with a great story and various side activities is only heightened by the chance to purchase new characters to explore and fight with.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink takes what matters from that concept, the characters, and makes them available for players to earn as they play. There are only a couple of characters, the player’s own and one other within the party, who are absolutely essential to the story. The rest are interchangeable, and all have their own backstories that can be steadily explored as players level up and complete certain chapters.

We thought this was a nice nod to the series’ origins, and can’t help but love the idea that the being that invented Granblue’s version of magic is currently in our party and presenting as a young girl who wields a book that generates massive ring weapons to slice foes with. They’re not even the largest of larger than life characters it’s possible to earn, and more will be added over time.

Each character, including the player’s, must be leveled up if they’re going to be able to compete with late game enemies, and this title doesn’t hold back when it comes to difficulty. It’s essential to upgrade every character to unlock small buffs to health, mana, and damage, whilst also unlocking new skills for them to use.

As players get deeper into the story, it’ll become necessary to analyze the party between missions and boss battles to figure out what the best setup and loadout is to take advantage of the upcoming fights. One skill, weapon, or character swap could be all that’s standing between a victory or crushing defeat after an hour-long fight.

I really enjoyed this level of depth to the game. At first, it doesn’t seem like it’s needed, but once the party begins dealing almost no damage to a boss, it becomes pretty obvious that something’s got to change. I made it a habit to complete side missions between every major one to ensure I could easily grind out as many levels as possible and give myself a better chance moving forward, but even then, the challenge didn’t truly let up.

This is the action part of the action RPG that Granblue Fantasy: Relink is. It pushes players just far enough that they could fail if they aren’t paying attention. It requires a certain amount of skill to conquer, but it’s not reactionary, it’s analytical. Knowing when the best time to use healing or attacks is or which skills a certain character must have in their arsenal to ensure everyone stays alive and fighting is far more important than hits landed. Plus, it’s all done in a beautiful art style that I wish I had more excuses to come back and play around in.

Never a Dull Moment

To a degree, Granblue Fantasy: Relink reminds me a lot of a Monster Hunter game. Gear can be upgraded to a point, but resources are required at various level checkpoints to take it further. With 150 levels per weapon, it’s no easy feat getting one fully upgraded, but the benefits are instantly noticeable with each milestone.

To get these resources, players can replay main missions or tackle the dozens of side quests out there. These range a little in objectives but mostly consist of killing lots of enemies and bosses. The boss fights are a great distraction and offer a nice way to toy around with party setups between story beats.

The islands players explore also have a lot more to offer than mere objectives. Challenges lie hidden in Omen Stones, some of which are way above the payer’s expected level and throttle them mercilessly until they relent and head off to level up some more.

There’s always a new path to take and somewhere else to explore. The level design in Granblue Fantasy: Relink is amazing, allowing for almost endless exploration because so much is hidden by perspective. It’s intentional but not forced, meaning careful players will find everything in a single playthrough, while others will be pleasantly surprised in repeat visits to locations.

Locating the right enemies to get the resources needed so that weapons and characters can finally move forward in the story is a greatly gratifying experience. This grind isn’t for everyone, and whole it’s not as bad as the grind a free-to-play game would shove down the player’s throat, it is present and not something everyone will be into.

A Reason for Everything

Everything that’s in Granblue Fantasy: Relink is just the beginning. While I couldn’t play any of it for this review, more endgame content in the form of bosses and characters are on the way. The game already has way more than required to necessitate one hundred plus hours in a single save file, and soon there will be so much more to get stuck into.

The toughest content the game throws at players sees bosses take hits for a good five minutes from a fully leveled-up party using maxxed out weapons without taking a single point of damage. It’s these sorts of seemingly insurmountable fights that could drive someone mad, but here they’re just epic.

When I played Final Fantasy games as a child, the graphics were terrible, but my mind filled in the images and acrobatics that the characters were clearly pulling off in the turn-based combat. Granblue Fantasy: Relink is that mental projection of those fights, and it’s unrivaled in how it transforms the hardcore JRPG experience into something a little more approachable but way more challenging simultaneously.

There are so many things about this game that I’d usually avoid, be it being inspired by a gacha title, the anime art style that I don’t always gel with, the rich yet hefty amount of lore understanding it looks like it takes to get to grips with the world, and the astoundingly large bosses that move like lightning. Yet still, somehow, I’m gripped by it and can’t wait to get even more out of the Granblue universe.

All of this makes for a fabulous package, but Granblue Fantasy: Relink throws in one more bonus in the form of multiplayer. Each party must contain four characters, and players can team up online to play together with their own characters from their own save files. So if each player has a fully-leveled character with top level weapons, they stand a much better chance of taking down a colossal boss than any of them do alone.

Verdict

I am nothing short of blown away by Granblue Fantasy: Relink. It blends the action RPG elements of soulsborne titles with exactly what’s desired from JRPGs and throws in a dash of gacha fun to create a game that’s filling and always flavorful. Just when I think it’s going to get tired and boring, it surprises me and holds my gaze all the more fiercely. Best of all, the game can be played entirely offline, meaning long-time fans of the series who have suffered through server outages no longer need to worry with this well-rounded Granblue-shaped package that can be played anywhere with a terrible internet connection.

New city, same old you. Everyone in Granblue Fantasy: Relink has a side quest for you, and in a bustling city like Seedhollow, that just means more quests.

After each chapter and difficulty is unlocked, you’ll get new quests to gather all over the city. They’ll slowly start piling up on your questlog. Eventually, keeping track of what has already been completed, what needs to be done, and each quest’s requirements will be nearly impossible. Difference Between Main Quests and Side Quests in Granblue Fantasy: Relink

All the quests are divided into two types: Main Quests and Side Quests. Main Quests progress the game’s story and are required. Side Quests are optional, but they make characters stronger and add replay value to the game. Over a hundred Side Quests are available in Granblue Fantasy: Relink, and most can even be played by multiplayer co-op.

If you prefer to stick to the original crew members, the best party you can compose in Granblue Fantasy: Relink is Io as a Caster/Healer, Rackham as a Ranged DPS, Katalina as a Tank, and Captain as a Melee DPS. Here is a breakdown of each of those characters and their role:

• Rackham is a fire-element, gun-wielding human. He’s a competent damage dealer who never loses mobility. Spend most of your Mastery Points in the Attack category to turn him into a deadly Ranged DPS.
• Katalina is a water-element human whose weapon of choice is a saber. While she can deal some damage, her abilities are more suited for soaking up damage as a tank. This means most Mastery Points should go in the Defense category.
• Io is your electric-type healer. She is technically an elemental magic caster, which means she can cast ice, fire, and electric spells and massively heal every party member.

• Narmaya is an elegant blade master who can take on the role of ranged DPS. Her playstyle involves switching between two distinctive stances catering to wide-reaching attacks and precise single-target focus. 
• Ferry is a summoner with ghostly companions. She can seamlessly transition between ranged and melee DPS, which makes her ideal as an off-DPS.

Original Crew Members in Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Ranked

Up until you earn your first Crewmate Card in Granblue Fantasy: Relink, you can choose between the handful of characters who factor into the main story as members of the Grandcypher crew. These are also the characters you’ll get to know best throughout the story since they will have dialogue in and out of combat regardless of whether they’re in your current party.

Because they get the most story mode screen time, plus more background through Fate Episodes, it’s only fair to rank them on their terms and let the additional recruitable crewmates have their own character tier list. In terms of combat efficacy, keep in mind that these characters are only as strong as the Mastery Points you invest in them and the weapons you give them.

1. Katalina

A knight with some impressively sculpted armor, Katalina’s affection for her young charge Lyria is a clear driving force for her throughout the story. She is impressive in combat, particularly if you spend the points to level up her defensive abilities and weapons. Katalina excels at taking damage for the team while dealing out plenty to enemies as well.

Katalina speaks her mind and has a singular focus on protecting Lyria and the rest of the crew in Granblue Fantasy: Relink, making her a bit of a mother figure on the Grandcypher. She’s a must-have in my personal party lineup and a fun character to get to know throughout the game, too.

2. Io

As the primary healer and spellcaster available to you early in the game, Io is an essential party member in my book. Io has an arsenal of elemental spells at her disposal as you spend mastery points to unlock them, so she’s not bad in a fight, either.

Story-wise, Io has a spunky, youthful energy and doesn’t shy away from girly things like makeup. We love to see it.

3. Rackam

A man and his ship are the love story that never quits, and Rackam’s main personality trait is his relationship to the Grandcypher. His go-to weapon in Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a gun, and his fire-type ranged attacks make him a powerful addition to your party, especially early on. He also has plenty of powerful self-buffs to truly make him a formidable damage-dealer.

He may not be the most interesting character, but he sure does pack a punch when you need some deadly ranged attacks.

4. Captain / Player Character (Gran / Djeeta)

The Captain is the main character you’ll play during the story since you’ve got to have them in your party. That said, this character suffers from being the avatar for the player, and their personality isn’t super developed.

In combat, they’re pretty powerful with melee moves, but I struggled a bit with the lack of ranged options. Even so, I put a lot of my mastery points into this character since I knew they’d be with me in combat for the long haul, making them pretty formidable in a fight.

5. Rosetta

Rosetta is a bit of a mystery in Granblue Fantasy: Relink, with not much to go on from her info card or her interactions with the rest of the crew. She’s sharp like the roses she uses in combat, planting them around the battleground as she casts her spells.

Rosetta can be useful in combat, but she doesn’t bring much to the table that you can’t get through other crewmates in your party, so I ditched her early on in favor of other characters that sparked my interest.

6. Eugen

This guy is a veteran soldier with an eye patch, and that’s about all we’ve got to go on initially. He totes a huge gun and is another solid option for ranged fighting. He has plenty to say during combat regardless of whether he’s in your party, but in terms of character traits, there’s nothing much that stands out about him.

Other characters make for better-ranged fighters, so Eugen is solidly low on our list of combat crewmates.

7. Lyria

One of two Grandcypher crewmates in Granblue Fantasy: Relink who can’t join the fight is Lyria, a young girl with the ability to take primal beasts. Lyria is mild and naive with a kind heart and a strong connection to the Captain thanks to their lifelink.

She factors heavily into the plot in ways that also mean we don’t spend as much time with her as other crewmates. Between this an her non-combat role, she’s pretty low on our list.

8. Vyrn

Some players probably love Vyrn’s wisecracking, childlike role as the comic relief of the party. Some players are not me. Vyrn is also not a playable character but you’ll get to know him plenty from his dialogue in and out of combat.

Vyrn is a tiny dragon friend of the Captain who never stops talking and who also doesn’t join in with combat. He’s part narrator and part navigation system, but to me, he’s also pretty darn annoying.

Recruitable Crewmates in Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Ranked

Once you progress in Granblue Fantasy: Relink and meet Rolan, you’ll start to earn Crewmate Cards that let you recruit additional members to your party. These characters come to play mainly in combat and don’t really join in when it comes to main story moments, which still center on the Grandcypher crew.

Even so, the game provides some interesting backstory for them that helps us know a bit about what landed their role as crewmates for hire. Once you move on to post-game content, many of these recruits become essential party members in Granblue Fantasy: Relink.

1. Cagliostro

While Io makes for a good healer in the early game, Cagliostro really shines with powerful healing and buffing spells, making her a solid recruit. Several of her healing spells are Area of Effect, making them useful for your entire party, and she can debuff your enemies as well as make your team stronger.

Her alchemical skills are legendary and they’re an asset to your party, providing much-needed healing as well as buffs for you and debuffs for your enemies.

2. Ferry

A young woman with ghostly animal companions, Ferry brings a good mix of close-range and ranged combat in Granblue Fantasy: Relink. Her summoned creatures can also bypass mechanics that prevent your party from damaging enemies, giving you an edge to keep doing damage.

Seeing her ghostly friends running around the battlefield is reason enough to spend Crewmate Card on Ferry in my book, but she’s also a powerful ally to have in your arsenal due to her versatility.

3. Vane

This knight is a friend of Lancelot’s and has a complementary combat style. If you’re looking for someone who can absorb damage and protect the party, Vane fits the mold.

He deals out damage and can wield some powerful self-buffs, but it’s the Rampart abilities that really make him an asset to your team. This ability to protect your party sets him apart from other damage dealers like Katalina, earning him a solidly high spot in our character tier list for Granblue Fantasy: Relink.

4. Percival

Percival is a fire-element knight who packs an offensive punch. He makes a solid tank with quick charging abilities and powerful hits, while being able to take a good amount of damage. He also brings some helpful enemy debuffs and area of effect attacks to the table.

Personally I stick with Katalina in this role because I love a girl power party, but Percival certainly brings some solid skills to the table as an additional recruitable crewmate.

5. Charlotta

This pint-sized knight in Granblue Fantasy: Relink emphasizes bringing justice with her swift and powerful melee attacks.

She’s adept at attacking quickly and building combos and gains a power boost when successfully avoiding enemy attacks. If you like a fast character who can cover some ground or just love those halfing vibes from the Harvins, Carlotta is an asset to your party.

6. Yodarha

I won’t lie to you, the character design on this guy gives me enough of a chuckle that it just might boost his ratings. The mustache alone is worth having him around. Also, his cannon nickname is Yoda.

But joking aside, Yodarha’s a speedy melee character with an emphasis on combos, making his fighting style somewhat similar to Charlotta’s. He’s a fun character design-wise but doesn’t bring too much to the party that you can’t get out of other, more powerful recruits.

7. Lancelot

Predictably enough given his namesake, Lancelot is a knight in Granblue Fantasy: Relink. He brings powerful water elemental moves to the table, becoming ice-cold as combat goes on and increasing the damage he deals.

Lancelot is best at close range and has some good dodging abilities, but overall isn’t as compelling a party addition as some other unlockable characters.

8. Narmaya

With her complicated swordplay styles, Narmaya can be a versatile force on the battlefield. She’s certainly a fan-favorite character and can be quite formidable if you’ve got the right build for her.

In Dawnfly mode she delivers deliberate, big-damage hits at a slower place, while her Freeflutter stance emphasizes combos. The versatility comes in handy, but can also be trickier to master than some of the more straightforward play styles.

9. Zeta

Zeta’s a primal beast hunter whose preferred weapon is a spear. She launches into the air and drops down on her enemies from above, making her melee style unique from many other damage dealers you can recruit.

That said, there are other melee characters with a stronger arsenal of attacks and skills that will make better additions to your party in Granblue Fantasy: Relink.

10. Vaseraga

Vaseraga is another former primal beast hunter, and he’s a powerful damage dealer with his scythe.

Some of his skills draw from his own HP, which can be frustrating if you don’t play your cards right when using this Granblue crewmate. That said, he can also absorb damage and send it flying back at his foes, which can come in handy.

11. Ghandagoza

This guy brings martial arts fighting to the table with quick-flying fists that deal damage with skill and require some deft timing on the player’s part to really sing.

Ghandagoza works best at close range and when his rage meter fills up, making him less versatile than other characters but worthwhile especially if you love to play a monk in D&D.

12. Siegfried

Yet another knight, this guy’s got a tragic backstory that led him to exile.

Siegfried’s a greatsword-swinging melee combatant, something that can be valuable in a party – but you can get from a variety of other recruitable characters as well. Because of that, he earns the bottom spot on our Granblue Fantasy: Relink character tier list.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink Romance Explained

The short answer is no, Granblue Fantasy: Relink does not have romance.

While the game is an RPG in the sense that you get to level up your characters and choose how to develop their skills and strengths, it doesn’t have that Baldur’s Gate 3 layer of story spice. You can’t flirt with or romance your crewmates or adorably awkward NPCs like Rolan, no matter how much you might want to. (Just me?)

The interactions between your character and the others are relatively scripted, with just two different dialogue options to choose between, and in my experience, the decision doesn’t really seem to impact the story very much.

Romance and dating also don’t factor into the main storyline of Granblue Fantasy: Relink, even between side characters. Fan theories & fan fiction I may or may not be thinking of writing aside, we don’t get any indication of romantic love as a factor in the story. While there are a few character interactions you could read into with a romantic mind, the story in Granblue Fantasy: Relink is one of friendship and adventure, not one of romance.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink Roadmap-Will We Ever Get Romance?

The developers of Granblue Fantasy: Relink have been pretty clear that they have future plans for updating the game. And ever since that viral Cult of the Lamb tweet added some “adult themes” to the game, we can’t help but wonder if other games will add romance later in their roadmaps.

Currently, the roadmap for Granblue Fantasy: Relink includes a few more characters but not much else aside some tempting “coming soon” and tentative dates for future updates. So no, we don’t see any definite plans for romance coming to the Skyfarers any time soon, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep on shipping your personal head cannon.

How Many Chapters Are in the Main Story for Granblue Fantasy: Relink?

The main story for Granblue Fantasy: Relink has 10 Chapters. If you grind it out and stay focused, it will take many gamers around 15-20 hours to complete the first 10 Chapters.

It’s easy to fall down a rabbit hole completing side quests and grabbing quests at the quest counter/ to level up, but even so, the main story feels relatively quick, with some players saying it felt too short. You can flesh out the story and get to know the characters more if you play their Fate Episodes, but even so, we’re hoping to see more of the story as additional updates are added to the game.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink Epilogue

When you finish the main story, you’re not done just yet! Chapter 0, aka the Epilogue, is a lengthy chunk of post-game content that adds another several hours of challenging gameplay, with tough bosses and dungeons. As an epilogue, this part of the game does continue the story, so it’s a necessary part of playing the game if you want to get the most out of it.

The Granblue Fantasy: Relink epilogue is sparked by a conversation with Rolan, aka Mr. Fix It. He will give you a series of challenging quests to complete, which take you across the map and let you explore the world more fully. Once you complete the epilogue, the story portion of Granblue is more or less complete, and it’s time to move on to the post-game/end-game content.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink Endgame Content

For many, the endgame content and multiplayer modes are the real draw of Granblue Fantasy: Relink. Once you finish the main story, you can keep taking on quests alone or with other players, unlocking more difficult challenges as you level up your characters.

Once you’ve reached a high enough level, you can take on Raids in the game. These are the most difficult quests available and will test your skills and your characters’ by battling difficult bosses. Many players will want to take on these challenges with a group, much like Raids in other games, but you can also go it alone if you prefer.

How to Farm Mastery Points During Chapters 1-0 in Granblue Fantasy: Relink

The best way to farm Mastery Points as you work through Granblue Fantasy: Relink‘s main story is to complete Counter Quests solo. 

By turning off Co-Op mode, you’ll have your usual party of four delve into these boss, defend, and survival challenges with you. Four party members means four people leveling up and contributing to the Mastery Points pool, as opposed to just one if you chose to complete these quests with other players.

TIP: Accept all available side quests before embarking on Counter Quests. If you defeat a Wyvern without accepting the “Defeat a Wyvern” quest, progress won’t count toward completing that side quest.

Farming Mastery Points is faster after you get to Chapter 0 in Granblue Fantasy: Relink. After completing the story, head to Seedhollow, where 5 Hard mode boss quests await. 

Defeating these bosses not only nets you a solid 200 Mastery Points but also primes you for additional rewards like Dragon Scales. Plus, by accepting and completing a side quest from an NPC after each boss encounter, you’ll bag an extra 250 Mastery Points per turn-in. 

How to Farm Mastery Points in the Endgame in Granblue Fantasy: Relink

The best way to farm Mastery Points once you’ve completed Chapter 0 is to complete the Futureproof Trading, and Presentpoof Investing quests in Folca on repeat in Granblue Fantasy: Relink.

This method was discovered by NonHeroJCs, and it involves completing these quests in Folca and opening Lyria’s Journal immediately post-completion to trigger a glitch that causes them to reset. 

• To complete Futureproof Trading, you’ll need 5 Fire and Earth Shards. These can be obtained from Golemology 101 (Normal) and The Saga Continues: Fire (Normal).
• To complete Presentpoof Investing, you’ll need 5 Water and Wind Shards. These can be obtained from Eye Have a Problem (Normal) and Saga Grande: The Beginning (Normal)

Both quests reward 700 Mastery Points in Granblue Fantasy: Relink each, but you can repeat this process as often as you want.

There are a plethora of challenges awaiting players who take the leap into Granblue Fantasy: Relink. Not only is the story filled with powerful bosses, but there are optional activities such as Omen Stones to push players to their limits at every turn.

Is it Possible to Travel Back to Omen Stones in Granblue Fantasy: Relink?

Yes, players can travel back to Omen Stones in Granblue Fantasy: Relink by beating the game’s story and using chapter select to return to the chapter where they know they missed one. This may seem convoluted, but it’s the best and only way to get back to those Omen Stones that have been skipped because of their difficulty or simply by not being noticed.

We found most early Omen Stones quite easy to beat, even if the enemies within them were higher than our own. However, Chapter 5 has an Omen Stone that pushes players out of their comfort zone with level 40+ enemies that can rip them to shreds. We’d been completing side quests and Fate Episodes between chapters and were still barely ready for this one with the Glacier Stalker boss fight.

What Are Omen Stones in Granblue Fantasy: Relink?

Omen Stones are challenging battles in Granblue Fantasy: Relink that players can choose to fight or leave. Each one provides a few chests with resources players will need to upgrade their characters and weapons faster, so they’re well worth doing, but not all of them are easy.

Players must complete as many activities as they can, fight every enemy they see, and do everything possible to earn Mastery Points and level up their characters during the game’s story. This will see them reach a high enough level that they should be able to beat every Omen Stone as they encounter them. The developer placed them deliberately to push players and their parties to their limits. However, they’ve also been designed to be just barely possible, so players feel that rush of finishing one as Dark Souls players do when beating a boss.
