Stardew Valley has quite a few hidden nooks and crannies, meaning it can take a while to learn everything there is to know about the village and its inhabitants. One of the game’s mysteries whether there’s anything you’re supposed to do when you get that “train passing through” message. If you’ve never managed to make it to the station while the train was still rushing by, you might not even know that trains bring valuable supplies you can snatch up.

What Should You Do When A Train Is Passing Through Stardew Valley?

The next time your game tells you a train is passing through Stardew Valley, run don’t walk to the train station as quick as you can.

When the train comes through, it will often drop some items that you can gather. However, these items will only spawn if you’re standing by the train when it comes through. So even if you get to the station right after the train leaves, you won’t be able to reap the rewards.

Some players have said that they are able to collect the items even if they aren’t there when the train passes through as long as they arrive on the same day. However, this seems to be inconsistent, so your best bet is to get there to watch the train as this seems to be the most reliable way to ensure that dropped items will spawn in your game.

When trying to collect items, be careful not to stand in front of the oncoming train. Your character will take damage if the train hits you. And no, unfortunately you can’t ride the train. It comes through the station but never stops there.

When Do Trains Come Through Stardew Valley?

Every in-game day between 9am and 6pm has a random chance for a train to come through the village. This event takes place at the train tracks in the train station area, north the mountain area with an entrance near Linus’ tent.

The type of train that appears is also random, and not every train drops the same items. Open-topped cargo trains spawn the most resource drops, whereas if your train is a passenger train, it won’t drop anything.

In recent updates to Stardew Valley, trains were tweaked to drop even more items when they pass through the valley. Here are a few of the items that players can get from the train, though others may spawn occasionally as well:

  • Stone
  • Iron Ore
  • Coal
  • Wood
  • Geodes
  • Leprechaun Shoes

If you’re trying to stock up on any of these items and a train happens to come through, it’s worth trying to get there in time to gather the fallen supplies. You might get something good, or at least get to watch the train go by, which is a fun way to experience the wider world of the game.
